Migraine Headache

The cause of migraine headaches is still not known. There are theories but there are no tests for migraines. There is no blood test and no brain scan that can diagnose migraine headaches.

What we know about migraines is what we have learned from people who suffer from them.

Some of the triggers that seem to be common among people who get migraine headaches are:

  • Stress

  • Lack of sleep

  • Weather changes

  • Smells, sounds and exposure to bright light

  • Dehydration

It seems that the nervous system has become hyper-sensitized and more fragile than that of people who don’t get migraines.

At Range Of Motion we help get relief for migraine patients by releasing tight muscles in the upper back and in the neck.

There are no known cures for migraines but the goal is to have them happen less frequently.

If the autonomic nervous system is more sympathetic dominant (fight or flight) the body is on alert more than it is at rest. When we are in fight or flight, our upper back and neck muscles can get tight in a reflexive way.

If releasing the stress muscles of the upper back and neck can help the autonomic nervous system to become more balanced and allow the body to be in parasympathetic (rest and digest) more of the time, perhaps we are helping migraines to happen less frequently.

Most of the triggers for migraine headaches are things that put stress on the nervous system.

We believe our patients respond well to a muscle tension approach to treating migraines because we are allowing the body to be under less stress.

Since the true cause of migraines is still unknown, we have to use observation to see what is causing the migraine and what is helping it.

Patients do find that their migraines are less frequent for longer periods of time when they are getting an orthopedic acupuncture treatment that addresses tight stress muscles.

We also treat:

  • Cluster Headache

  • Tension Headache

  • TMJ
